Book Review
I looked for more romance books to read in February and stumbled across this novella recommended on Instagram. I’ve not read from Christina Lauren before but I do have another one of their books sitting on my TBR trolley. I thought I would try out the writing style with a cute little novella. Because I have Amazon Prime, the eBook was included, so I didn’t have to pay for it. Win, win!
The book’s short length makes the romance feel very insta-lovey—a trope I don’t usually enjoy—but it works well for this type of book. I will mention that this book is definitely more character-driven than it is plot-driven. The main characters were okay overall and I do feel they suited each other well.
The story develops most of the romance through email, since the characters mainly communicate that way. I enjoyed the banter they were having with each other. Plus, it was fun that they kept bumping into each other in real life without realising they’ve been communicating over email. I’m glad the book gives the spice rating at the start because it’s very “closed door” romance. I would’ve liked maybe a little bit more in terms of the romance but for a novella it was okay.
Pacing was good all the way throughout the book but unfortunately the ending was a little bit abrupt. I understand that this can happen in shorter books, but I think the author could have handled it better. Overall, this is a cute and average romance book. If you’re looking for a quick romance palate cleanser to read between books then I’d give this one a try. After this, I’m definitely intrigued to try the full-length novel I have by Christina Lauren so I can get more of an idea about their writing.
