Book Synopsis:
Saffy is waiting to go into a job interview when she receives a text message from her best friend, Leona:
Can’t speak… don’t text or call… please just come
As Saffy struggles to understand what is happening the phone screen changes:
This message was deleted.
Saffy races to Leona’s house, but when her friend answers the door, she insists everything’s fine. She doesn’t know anything about the message. Saffy can tell something’s not right, but after looking around the house, she can’t think of anything else she can do.
Six hours later, Saffy gets a knock on the door. It’s the police. Leona is missing, with her young child. There’s blood everywhere.
And Saffy was the last one to see them alive…
Book Review
I had never read a K.L. Slater book before this one, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It was such a gripping, tension-filled and twist-filled book that kept me wanting to read which is always a good sign for a mystery/thriller book.
The start of the book had me sucked in straight away with message that ends up… deleted. I love when a book has me hooked right from the start!
There were some plot twists that I had no idea were going to happen throughout the book but I ended up piecing the things together for the main plot twist at the end. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to guess the twist and it’s all personal preference on what you like in this book genre. I personally enjoy guessing some twists while still being shocked by others I didn’t see coming—it gives me a nice balance.
I thought the plot was well thought out and enjoyed how the story built throughout. However, there were some times where I wasn’t sure where the story was going but Slater managed to bring the past and the present together well in the end.
The ending disappointed me slightly, which lowered my rating. It felt a bit flat and rushed in my opinion considering the rollercoaster ride that Slater took me on to get there. This was very bingeable and did not take me long to finish as I just wanted to keep on reading.
If you’re after a gripping mystery/thriller or need a slump buster, I’d recommend this one. I had a great time and would definitely try another of her books.
